Era
Then the boom hit. US bicycle sales doubled from 7 million in 1970 to 14 million in 1972, and lightweight bikes went from about 200,000 a year to 8 million. In 1972, 1973 and 1974 Americans bought more bicycles than cars. European parts makers couldn't keep up, and SunTour and Shimano of Japan filled the gap. Then sales fell suddenly and shops sat on unsold stock, which is a big reason so many 1970s ten-speeds are still around. At the top end, Campagnolo launched Super Record in 1973 and Reynolds brought out 753 in 1975.
