The Super was the backbone of Colnago's range in the 1970s, a lugged Columbus SL racing frame from Ernesto Colnago's shop in Cambiago, near Milan. Colnago was building Eddy Merckx's race bikes in the Molteni years, and a 1971 Super of Merckx's survives. The model stayed in the catalog right through the 1980s. A 1981 US catalog sold the Super and the lighter Mexico side by side, identical except for the tubing. Giuseppe Saronni won the 1982 World Championship at Goodwood on a Colnago, and Colnago has said it was a Super Profil, the crimped-tube version. Collectors look for the clover cut-out in the bottom bracket shell, the fluted seat stay caps and an original fork.

Most Supers are tired rather than broken. Expect rust inside the tubes, a seized seatpost or stem, and paint that's been touched up. Some 1970s frames were roughly finished, so judge the brazing and lug work for yourself.

Collectors pay for original paint on a Super, so a repaint should cost you less. Plenty are listed, mostly $1,100 to $1,950 delivered, with frames and forks from $689. We'd buy the complete Nuovo Record bike at $1,399. Look under the bottom bracket for the clover cut-out, and check the fluted seat stay caps and the Columbus label.
