The Super Course was the cheapest Reynolds 531 road bike in Raleigh's 1976 catalog, and the 531 only goes so far. The main tubes are 531 plain gauge, not butted, as the decal in that catalog says, and by 1978 the fork and stays were Raleigh's own high-tensile steel. Through the bike boom it was also the cheapest Raleigh with alloy rims. The parts changed a lot. Early 1970s bikes had Huret gears and a cottered Nervar crank, the 1976 Mark II had a Huret Challenger and a 27 lb catalog weight, and the 1978 bike moved to SunTour and 700c wheels. Sheldon Brown called them nice bikes that take well to modern parts, and that's the best way to buy one.

The threading isn't consistent across years, so measure before you buy parts. Original derailleurs and cottered cranks are basic, and seized seatposts and stems are common.

Buying guide
Super Course threads vary, so ask the seller to measure the bottom bracket shell. A 68 mm shell points to English threads, and 71 or 76 mm to Raleigh's 26 TPI. Only the main tubes are 531 plain gauge, so a 531 butted decal means a swap. Plenty are up, mostly $260 to $550 delivered, from about $155 for a bare frame to about $670 for a complete 1978.
