Brand
Edoardo Bianchi was 21 when he opened a bicycle shop at 7 Via Nirone in Milan in 1885, and the company is the oldest bicycle maker still in business. Fausto Coppi won the Giro four times and the Tour de France in 1949 and 1952 for Bianchi, and Felice Gimondi was world champion on a Bianchi in 1973. By then the head office and factory were in Treviglio, near Bergamo, where a separate racing department, the Reparto Corse, built the top frames by hand in Columbus tubing. Nobody has documented where celeste came from, and not every old Bianchi is celeste. In the early 1980s the team ran as Bianchi-Piaggio, and by the 1980s some cheaper models were built in Japan. Bianchi has been part of Sweden's Cycleurope group since 1997. On any vintage Bianchi, find out first whether it was made in Italy or Japan. The tubing label, decals and parts give the year.
