Peugeot UO-8

Name: Peugeot UO-8
Brand: Peugeot
Availability: InStock

The UO-8 is the bike-boom Peugeot most people actually owned, the everyday ten-speed rather than the racer. In the 1974 US catalog that meant plain Peugeot steel, Simplex Prestige derailleurs, Mafac Racer brakes, Normandy quick-release hubs and 27 in clinchers, at 28 lb. It was on sale from the early 1960s, with Huret derailleurs at first and then Simplex's white Delrin ones, and the 1980 UO8 Sport is the last we found in a US catalog. Sheldon Brown called low-end bike-boom French bikes beaters. His co-author John Allen made the UO-8 his favorite touring bike anyway, for its long chainstays and tough plain-gauge tubing. It rides well, and it's a cheap way into old French steel.

Tubing, threads, wheels and paint

Tubing: Peugeot's catalogs call it Peugeot lightweight tubing, with no Reynolds decal, and by 1980 the catalog calls it Peugeot 103 tubing. It's plain-gauge carbon steel, heavier than butted tubing. John Allen points out it doesn't dent the way thin-walled tubing does.
The frame: The UO-8 has unusually long chainstays, which give heel room for rear panniers. Ask for photos of the seat cluster, the dropouts and under the bottom bracket. Look for rust where water sits and for bends in the plain rear dropouts.
Sizing: The 1978 catalog listed 19 1/2, 21, 23, 24, 25 and 26 in frames, and Peugeot called its inch sizes approximate. A tape measure on the seat tube beats the size in the title.
Threads and standards: Expect French threading on a bike-boom UO-8, 35 x 1 mm at the bottom bracket, plus a French headset and a 22.0 mm stem. French cups are getting scarce. A Japanese spindle made for a 70 mm Italian shell often fits, and Phil Wood French rings or a Velo Orange threadless cartridge work too.
Wheels: It came with 27 x 1 1/4 in clinchers and a 5-speed freewheel, which points to 120 mm rear spacing. The 27 in size was an export size never used in France, and tires for it are still easy to find in the US.
Parts it came with: Up to about 1963 it had Huret Allvit derailleurs, then white Delrin Simplex Prestige, with the 637 rear from 1971. By 1978 it had Simplex SJ810GT, Weinmann 610 brakes and a steel Cyclo crank, and by 1980 a Solida alloy crank. If you find a cottered crank, French cotters are 9 mm, not the usual 9.5 mm.
Dating it: Check under the bottom bracket or on the rear dropout for a serial. Six digits suggests the 1960s and seven the 1970s. Simplex derailleurs and many rims and hubs are date-stamped, and a collector's UO8 timeline online dates the decals.
Paint and decals: The decals changed every few years, from Trophée de France shields in the early 1960s to rectangular lion decals from 1971. A matching set for the era is a good sign of original paint.
Safety jobs: Steel rims brake poorly in the wet, and old Mafac and Weinmann pads go hard, so fit new pads. Check the stem and bars for cracks, and replace dry-rotted tires before riding.

What to check

Steel rims stop poorly in the wet, and the Delrin Simplex derailleurs crack with age. Bikes stored outside rust inside the tubes and at the dropouts, and French threading makes bottom bracket and headset parts harder to find.

01Model: Look for the UO8 decal or catalog parts in the photos. Sellers often call any old Peugeot a PX-10, and this is a different bike.
02Rust: Ask for close photos of the dropouts and under the bottom bracket. Surface rust is fine, but flaking or pitting isn't.
03Bottom bracket: Ask whether the bottom bracket is original or has been rethreaded. An original one is French-threaded.
04Crank: Check the photos for a cotter pin through the crank arm. Cottered cranks need 9 mm cotters, so ask whether they're tight.
05Derailleurs: Look at the Simplex rear derailleur in the photos. It should be complete, with no cracks in the plastic body.
06Rims and brakes: Check whether the rims are steel or alloy. Steel rims are original, but alloy ones stop much better.
07Tires: Look at the tire sidewalls on arrival. Cracked or dry tires need replacing before you ride.

Buying guide

Which one to buy

§ Oct 19, 2026

UO-8s are the cheap way into old French steel, and complete ones ask about $140–170 delivered. We'd buy the white 57 cm at $154. Rust collects at the dropouts and under the bottom bracket, and the Delrin Simplex derailleur cracks, so look at both. Expect French threads, and skip the 1974 at $683 delivered.
