Faliero Masi brazed his first frame in Tuscany in 1926 and moved to Milan after the war, taking a space under the Vigorelli velodrome in 1949. Anquetil broke the hour record on a Masi frame there in 1956, and Masi frames won the Tour in 1959 and 1960. His road racer from about 1969 was the Gran Criterium. In 1972 he agreed to sell the Masi name to American Roland Sahm, and in 1973 he went to Carlsbad, California, to start US production with Mario Confente, while his son Alberto took over the Vigorelli shop and launched the Prestige and later the 3V. So there are two Masis. Italian ones carry a size stamp and later a date code but no serial, and US ones carry a serial number. The American company built Gran Criteriums in Carlsbad, Rancho Santa Fe and San Marcos, and in the 1990s it joined Haro. Check the stamps under the bottom bracket before you trust the decals, since Carlsbad used Italian decals too.
