Colnago named the Mexico after Eddy Merckx's 1972 Hour record in Mexico City, set on a featherweight steel bike Colnago built for him. The production Mexico was the Super's lighter twin. A 1981 US dealer catalog says the two were identical except for the tubing, with the Mexico in Columbus Record, a single-gauge set with 0.5 mm walls that saved about five and a half ounces on the frame and fork. That made it the climber's and time trialist's Colnago, and the export sheets paired it with Campagnolo Super Record. Colnago kept the name going with the crimped Nuovo Mexico in the early 1980s and the six-rib Esa Mexico in 1988, but the round-tubed Record frame is the original. Check the tubing label, because the frames look almost identical.

The thin Record tubes dent easily, so dents in the top tube and down tube are the main thing to look for. Otherwise expect the usual seized seatposts and stems and rust inside the tubes.

Mexico tubes are thin Columbus Record and they dent, so ask for raking-light photos of the top and down tubes. Ask for the tubing label too, since a Super can wear Mexico decals. Most ask $1,025 to $2,825 delivered, a wide band. The cheapest complete one is $1,325, and bare frames start at $910.
