Ernesto Colnago trained at Gloria as a boy, raced until a crash stopped him, and opened his own shop in Cambiago, near Milan, in 1954. He became head mechanic to the Molteni team and built race bikes for Eddy Merckx, including the steel bike Merckx used for his 1972 Hour record in Mexico City. After Michele Dancelli won the 1970 Milan to San Remo on a Colnago, Ernesto changed his logo to the Asso di Fiori, the ace of clubs you see cut into the bottom bracket shells. The Super was the 1970s mainstay, the lighter Mexico followed, and the Gilco-tubed Master arrived in 1983. Giuseppe Saronni won the 1982 Worlds at Goodwood on a Colnago. The family sold a majority stake to Chimera Investments of the UAE in 2020. Finish quality varied on some 1970s frames, so judge the brazing yourself. The tubing label, stay caps and fork tell you the year.
