Brand
Peugeot was a family steel firm long before it made cars. It started building high-wheelers at Beaulieu in 1882 and chain-drive bicycles in 1886, and Cycles Peugeot became its own company in 1926. Its pro team ran from 1901 to 1986 and won the Tour ten times, the last two with Bernard Thévenet in 1975 and 1977. Tom Simpson raced for it, and so did a young Eddy Merckx in 1966 and 1967. The black-and-white checkerboard came from that team. In the US, the PX-10 and UO-8 sold in huge numbers in the bike boom, through importers and then Cycles Peugeot USA from 1976. Peugeot left the US market around 1990 to 1991. The serial is under the bottom bracket, and the decals and dated parts narrow down the year. Most older ones have French threads and 22.0 mm stems, which matters when you order parts.
