Motobecane Le Champion
The mid-1970s Le Champion is a proper Campagnolo racer, one step below the Team Champion at the top of Motobecane's US range. In the 1975 US catalog it has Reynolds 531 double-butted tubing throughout, Prugnat Professional lugs, Campagnolo Nuovo Record derailleurs, a Record crank and hubs, Universal sidepulls and tubulars, at 22 lb. Later bikes changed a lot under the same name. The 1979 bike kept 531 but moved to Bocama lugs, Campagnolo Gran Sport parts and 700c clinchers. By 1984 it was a lugless Columbus SL frame with a Super Record crank. Which version you're buying matters more than the name.

Tubing, threads, wheels and paint
- Tubing
- The 1974, 1975 and 1979 US catalogs all list Reynolds 531 double-butted tubing for the Le Champion, throughout in 1974 and 1975. Look for the 531 decal on the seat tube. By 1984 the Le Champion had switched to lugless Columbus SL, so a Columbus decal is a later bike, not a fake.
- The frame
- The 1974 and 1975 frames used Prugnat Professional lugs with Campagnolo dropouts, and the 1979 frame Bocama lugs with braze-on cable guides. Check the head lugs and the seat cluster for cracked paint and look for rust in the bottom bracket.
- Threads and standards
- Like most Motobecanes from the mid-1970s, it should have a Swiss-thread bottom bracket. That's the French 35 x 1 mm thread with a left-hand fixed cup. Ask the seller what's in it before you order parts, and expect French-size stem and bar fittings.
- Wheels
- The 1974 and 1975 bikes came on tubulars with Super Champion rims and Campagnolo Record hubs, large flange in 1975. The 1979 bike switched to 700c Rigida clinchers. Five-speed freewheels of the era mean 120 mm rear spacing.
- Parts it came with
- In 1974 and 1975 it was Campagnolo everywhere but the brakes, with Nuovo Record derailleurs, a Record crank, Record hubs and Record pedals, plus Universal brakes. By 1979 it had Nuovo Record derailleurs with Gran Sport brakes, crank and hubs.
- Dating it
- The catalogs date it. Universal brakes and tubulars mean 1974 or 1975. Campagnolo Gran Sport brakes and 700c clinchers point to 1979, and a lugless Columbus SL frame with a Super Record crank is a 1984 bike.
- Paint and decals
- The 1975 catalog lists Silver Lilac, the 1979 bike champagne gold and the 1984 one night blue. A different color isn't proof of a repaint, but ask.
- Safety jobs
- Old tubulars and their glue should be replaced before any ride. Check Universal brake pads, which go hard with age.

What to check

- 01Tubing decal: Ask for a close photo of the seat tube decal. Reynolds 531 means a 1970s bike, and Columbus means a 1980s one.
- 02Campagnolo parts: Check the derailleurs and crank in the photos. They should be Campagnolo, Nuovo Record and Record on a mid-1970s bike.
- 03Brakes: Look at the brake calipers in the photos. Universal brakes match 1974 and 1975, and Campagnolo Gran Sport matches 1979.
- 04Head lugs: Ask for a close photo of the head tube lugs and fork crown. Paint should be unbroken around the lug edges.
- 05Wheels: Ask whether it has tubulars or clinchers and how old the tires are. Plan on new tires either way.
- 06Bottom bracket: Ask the seller to spin the cranks with the chain off. They should turn smoothly with no play.
- 07Stem and seatpost: Ask the seller to move the stem and seatpost. Both should come loose without force.
