Raleigh's 1976 US catalog sold the Team Professional, model DL185, as a duplicate of the bike its pro team rode. That meant Reynolds 531 double-butted throughout, hand-profiled spearpoint lugs, a sloping crown and Campagnolo Super Record down to a titanium crank axle, for a catalog weight of 20 lb. The team was TI-Raleigh, Peter Post's Dutch squad, and Joop Zoetemelk won the 1980 Tour de France on a Raleigh. The frames came from the Special Bicycle Development Unit, set up at Ilkeston in 1974 under Gerald O'Donovan, and owners report SB serials on Team Professionals. Ilkeston also built Team frames in Reynolds 753, and both get sold as a Team Pro, so read the decals before you pay.

Mixed parts and repaints are common, so compare the bike to the 1976 catalog spec. Old silk tubulars, seized seatposts and tired brake pads are the routine jobs.

Buying guide
The one Team Professional up is the later Ilkeston bike, a 1982/83 frameset titled Reynolds 753 with an SB serial, at about $1,155 delivered. The 531 bike in Raleigh's 1976 catalog is a different frame, so make sure the decal says 753. It's blue, where the catalog bike wore red with a yellow band, so ask about the paint. Budget for a group, too.
