A tall 60 cm 1975 that ships. The title says butted steel, which this frame isn't, so ask for photos of the down tube decals and the dropouts.
1975 Gitane Grand Sport Deluxe Touring Road Bike 60cm Large Lugged Butted Steel~
Gitane · Hi-ten steel · 1970s (the name was dropped in the 1980s)
Gitane Grand Sport De Luxe
The Grand Sport De Luxe was Gitane's entry-level 10-speed of the 1970s, and it's the Gitane you'll see for sale most often. It came in men's and women's models, mostly carried commuters, and was popular with students because it was cheap. It isn't a Reynolds 531 sport-tourer. Stamped dropouts, a fake chrome cover on the fork crown and kickstand mounts give it away, since better Gitanes had none of them. Owners describe heavy Stronglight steel cranks, Simplex derailleurs and Mafac Racer brakes. At a glance it looks like a Tour de France, so read the decals. Gitane dropped the name in the 1980s. Buy one to ride around town.

Tubing, threads, wheels and paint
- Tubing
- This is the bottom of Gitane's 1970s US range, and it has no Reynolds decal. The tells are stamped dropouts, a fake chrome cover on the fork crown and kickstand mounts, none of which you'll find on an Interclub or better. A listing calling it a 531 tourer has the wrong bike.
- The frame
- Check for dents, rust in the seat cluster and bottom bracket, and bent stamped dropouts. These were commuter bikes, so look closely at the rear triangle for rack and kickstand damage.
- Threads and standards
- It has French threads, with a 35 x 1 mm bottom bracket, a right-hand fixed cup and a 22.0 mm stem, so standard parts won't drop in. Budget for French cups or a Phil Wood or Velo Orange fix if the bottom bracket is rough.
- Wheels
- US-market French bikes of the era mostly came on 27 in wheels with five-speed freewheels, which means 120 mm rear spacing. Ask what size is on it before you buy tires.
- Parts it came with
- Expect a heavy Stronglight steel crank, Simplex derailleurs and Mafac Racer centerpulls. These are worth servicing but not upgrading on a bike like this. A kickstand is correct.
- Paint and decals
- The fork crown wears a chrome-look cover rather than real chrome, so peeling there is normal. Gitane's stickers had no clear coat, so expect worn logos.
- Safety jobs
- Replace old tires, tubes and brake pads before riding. Check the stem and bars for cracks, and make sure the stem isn't raised past its limit mark.
What to check
Rust, bent stamped dropouts and tired steel parts are common on these commuter bikes. Seized French stems and seatposts and old tires and pads are the usual jobs.
- 01Model decals: Ask for a photo of the down tube and head tube. The decals should name the Grand Sport, not a Tour de France or Interclub.
- 02Dropouts: Look at the rear dropouts in the photos. Stamped, flat dropouts are correct and should be straight.
- 03Fork crown: Check the fork crown in the photos. A chrome-look cover is original, and peeling there is cosmetic.
- 04Rust: Ask for photos of the seat cluster and under the bottom bracket. Surface rust is fine, but bubbling paint means rust underneath.
- 05Stem and seatpost: Ask the seller to move the stem and seatpost. Both should come loose without force.
- 06Brakes: Ask the seller to squeeze both brake levers on video. The pads should hit the rims squarely and the levers should return.
New to old steel? Spotting frame damage in listing photos covers lugs, dropouts and rust, and seller red flags covers wrong sizes, swapped parts and repaints sold as original.
Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 19, 2026This was Gitane's entry-level commuter, so ignore any butted or 531 claim and look for stamped dropouts and a chrome-look cover on the fork crown. Only a handful are listed, and complete ones that ship ask about $260–280 delivered. We'd take the 1975 in 60 cm at $279. The women's mixte at $275 is the other good one if you can collect it.
