Faliero Masi brazed his first frame in 1926 and set up in Milan in 1949 under a curve of the Vigorelli velodrome. Jacques Anquetil broke the hour record there on a Masi frame in 1956, and Masi frames won the Tour for Bahamontes in 1959 and Nencini in 1960. The Gran Criterium, his road racer, came out around 1969 to 1970. It's Gran, not Grand. In 1972 Faliero agreed to sell the Masi name to American businessman Roland Sahm, and in 1973 he left for California while his son Alberto took over the Vigorelli shop. Alberto kept building Italian Gran Criteriums in small numbers next to his new Prestige until at least 1978. Any Gran Criterium from 1972 or earlier is Italian, and those are the ones collectors chase.

Italian or American is the big question on any Gran Criterium, and the decals won't settle it, so check the stamps. Otherwise expect the usual jobs on an old frame, such as old tubulars and a stuck stem or seatpost.

Any Gran Criterium from 1972 or earlier is Italian, and that's what collectors pay for. So the 1972 is our pick, at only $126 more than the undated Nuovo Record bike. The 1974 is about half the price at $1,950 delivered, but Carlsbad bikes wore the same decals by then, so look under the bottom bracket. A size stamp with no serial fits an Italian frame.
