Colnago · Other Columbus tubing · 1983 onward (still made)
Ernesto Colnago spent the early 1980s chasing stiffness. Riders said steel frames were too soft, so he tried oval and crimped tubes, and in 1983 he launched the Master on Columbus Gilco tubing. Gilco was Columbus's design arm under Gilberto Colombo, and the tubes were drawn into a fluted, star-shaped section to Colnago's own patent. You can see the ridges along the top tube in any side photo. The Master became Colnago's flagship steel frame and spawned a family, from the Krono time trial bike to the Masterpiù of 1988 with its brake cable inside the top tube. Colnago still makes a Master today, so check the details, the fork and the components to be sure you're looking at a 1980s frame.

Original parts to look for
Hard to find if missing
Check the listing photos against these lists, and ask the seller about anything you can’t see. Swapped or missing original parts should come off the price if originality matters to you. For replacements, see our vintage components guide.
Rust under chromed lugs and inside the fluted tubes is the main thing to look for on an old Master. Seized stems and seatposts are common, and many have swapped forks or later components.
New to old steel? Spotting frame damage in listing photos covers lugs, dropouts and rust, and seller red flags covers wrong sizes, swapped parts and repaints sold as original.
Buying guide
Few of these are the 1983 original. Most are later Master Olympics and Masterpiùs, and asks mostly run $1,225 to $2,175 delivered. Our pick is a Masterpiù with a C-Record and Super Record mix at $2,144. The fluted Gilco tubes are the giveaway, so find them and the Gilco label in the photos, and ignore the titanium Ovals and X-Lights that share the name.

A complete Master Olympic in size 58 for $1,382 delivered, well under most. It's a later Master, so ask which parts are on it.

C-Record with Super Record is the mix Colnago fitted in the mid-1980s, so the parts look right. On a Masterpiù the rear brake cable runs inside the top tube, which you can check in the photos.
