Bianchi Sport SS
The Sport SS is a Bianchi most people don't expect, because it was built in Japan. By the 1980s Bianchi had some less expensive models made there, and owners date the Sport SS to about 1982 to 1983. Documented examples have Ishiwata Magny tubing in the frame and fork, Shimano parts including a 105 Golden Arrow derailleur, a Tange headset, an SR stem and Araya rims on 27 in wheels. That's a solid Japanese spec, and Japanese-built Bianchis have a good name among riders for their build quality. Bianchi never put the Sport SS in the catalogs we could find, so most of what's known comes from owners. If you want a vintage Bianchi to ride without paying Italian prices, this is a good one to look for.

Frame check
Tubing, threads, wheels and paint
- Tubing
- This is a Japanese-built Bianchi. Owners have found Ishiwata Magny labels on the frame and fork, a manganese-molybdenum tubing, so look for that sticker in the photos. There's no Columbus label on these.
- The frame
- Ask for close photos of the lugs, dropouts and fork. Look for dents in the top tube and for a bent fork, which one owner reported after removing it in a hurry.
- Sizing
- Japanese-built Bianchis of the period were often sized in inches, and documented Sport SS frames include a 21 in. Ask for the seat tube and top tube in centimeters so you can compare.
- Threads and standards
- We couldn't find a published spec. One owner's bottom bracket shell measurement fits English (BSA) threading, as on most Japanese frames, not Italian. Ask the seller to read the cups before you order a bottom bracket, and expect a standard 22.2 mm quill stem.
- Wheels
- Documented examples run 27 x 1-1/4 in clinchers on Araya straight-sided alloy rims. Straight-sided rims like these are rated for lower pressures, so keep tires near 90 psi.
- Parts it came with
- Documented Sport SS bikes came with Shimano parts, including a 105 Golden Arrow rear derailleur on one and Shimano 600 shifters on another, plus a Tange headset and SR stem. Shimano parts are cheap and easy to find, which makes this an easy bike to keep running.
- Dating it
- Owners date these to about 1982 to 1983 from component dates, since Shimano made the 105 Golden Arrow derailleur from 1983 to 1986. A Piaggio decal is said to mark early-1980s Bianchis. In Canada the same class of Japanese bike was sold as the Bici I and Bici II.
- Paint and decals
- Many have lost their decals. Ask whether the Bianchi and tubing decals are still on the frame, since those are what make a Sport SS identifiable.
- Safety jobs
- Replace old tires, tubes and brake pads. Check the fork is straight before your first ride.
What to check
Expect the jobs any 40-year-old bike needs, with hard tires, worn brake pads and stiff cables. Bent forks and lost decals turn up on these.
- 01Tubing sticker: Look for the Ishiwata sticker on the seat tube in the photos. It confirms a Japanese-built frame.
- 02Model decal: Check the photos for Sport SS on the frame. A Sport SX is a different, later bike.
- 03Fork: Ask for a straight-on photo of the fork from the front. Both blades should look straight and even.
- 04Threads: Ask the seller to read the bottom bracket cup markings. Expect English (BSA) threads.
- 05Rims: Check the rim size and type in the photos. 27 in Araya alloy rims are original.
- 06Dents: Ask for a photo along the top tube in raking light. It should be smooth with no dents.
- 07Derailleurs: Ask the seller to shift through all the gears on a stand. It should shift cleanly without the chain dropping.
